Topic: Structure of the atom. Types, location, charge and number of subatomic particles.

 

NGSS:

C.PM: STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER
C.PM.1: Atomic structure - Evolution of atomic models/theory
  

Objectives:

Define an atom. Learn the evolution of atomic models.  Discuss the types, charges and location of particles within the atom.

 

Vocabulary:

 Nucleus, proton, electron, neutron

 

Student:

Students will examine the historical evolution of atomic models. The students will work with partners on the Structure of Atom Packet to develop a model that correctly represents the current understanding of the subatomic particles, their charges and location within the atom. IF additional work is needed, then students will work on Atomic Structure (Skill Practice 8). 

 

Teacher:

The teacher will go through summary notes or PowerPoint notes on the past and current atomic models. The teacher will discuss the subatomic particle experiments that lead to their discovery and the type, charge, mass and location of those particles.  

Resources:

Copies of Chapter 3 Schedule, Evolution of Atomic Models, Structure of the Atom Packet, Atomic Structure, Notes and PowerPoints

  

Evaluation:

Teacher should be spot checking student progress on the Atom Packet. It could be collected for 10 to 20 points for completion. If Atomic Structure is assigned, then It should be graded for 15 points for correctness.
