Radioactive decay leads to more stable isotopes. During decay particles and energy are released.  

Half-life is the time needed for one half of an amount of radioactive material to decay.

Radioactive nuclides become stable through a series of decays.

Nuclides can become radioactive naturally or artificially.

Nuclear processes, including fusion, fission, and radioactive decays of unstable nuclei, involve release or absorption of energy. The total number of neutrons plus protons does not change in any nuclear process.

Section 21.1: Nuclear reactions affect the nucleus of an atom.


Be able to complete nuclear reactions determining decay particles and energy are released.  Learn why natural decay occurs and why several decay steps may be necessary to reach a stable product. Understand the general process of transmutation. Use the concept of half lives to determine or calculate the amount of ending radioactive material at a given time.

S will read and take notes on 21.2 from PPT, text and available printable notes.  S will work alone or in small groups to complete Study Guide 21.2. S will examine the resource Radioisotopes. S will begin Chapter 21 Key Terms.   

S will work individually or in small groups on Half-life of Radioisotopes 

S will start online assignment EA 21a while Chromebooks are accessible. 


T will go over 21.2 PPT and monitor students as they work to complete Study Guide 21.2 and Key Terms. T may point out notable radioisotopes and uses to peak S interest and familiarity with the concepts and vocabulary. T will copy and distribute Study Guide 21.2 and the Schedule/Key Terms pages along with Radioisotopes resource. 

T will use the Alpha and Beta Decay simulations in class with students, guiding their experience and the discussion.

T will monitor student progress on Half-life of Radioisotopes worksheet. Go over several problems with them and possibly post the answer sheet to the worksheet. Some problems can be assigned and collected.

T will ensure that EA21a is published and that the window is open for an appropriate amount of time both in class and home time.

Copies of Half-life of Radioisotopes and possibly answer key will be made available for students. 


Students will submit for grading the 21.2 Study Guide and define the Key Terms for the chapter. Formative assessment will be done as T monitors and assists students with Half-life of Radioisotopes worksheet.
